The Chennai Super Kings are experiencing a challenging season, with the five-time IPL champions on the verge of missing out on the playoffs. It all started positively with a strong victory against their long-time rivals, the Mumbai Indians. However, things have taken a turn, as CSK finds themselves at the bottom of the standings while MI has improved and emerged as a serious contender for a top-four finish. The team's struggles can be attributed to inconsistent performances from their batting lineup, and they also faced a setback when captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined due to an elbow injury midway through the season. In Gaikwad's absence, the iconic MS Dhoni, who announced his resignation as captain prior to IPL 2024, has been at the helm of the team.

Despite Dhoni’s leadership, CSK's chances of making the playoffs have diminished further. With only two victories out of nine matches played, their auction strategies have come under scrutiny. Legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist suggests that it may be time for CSK to consider rebuilding for the upcoming season, indicating that Dhoni might be one of the players who needs to move on, hinting at the retired player's potential exit from the franchise.

“MS Dhoni has proven himself time and again. He has achieved everything possible in this sport. He will decide his own future, but for the sake of what’s to come, perhaps it’s best if he doesn’t return next year. Much love to you, MS. You are a true champion and an icon,” Gilchrist expressed. Nevertheless, he believes that CSK should retain both Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin for at least another season. “What a talent! Sure, he's getting older, but I still regard him as a rockstar, as Shane Warne once said at the very start of IPL. I would give him one more shot,” he added.
