On Thursday, Google revealed a new feature for Google Maps that enables users to ask detailed, real-life questions about locations directly in the app. This feature, known as Ask Maps, allows users to pose questions in everyday language and get AI-generated responses based on Maps information. Additionally, the tech company introduced Immersive Navigation, which they described as the most significant update to driving in Google Maps in over ten years. The Ask Maps feature merges the Gemini AI systems from the tech giant based in Mountain View with the vast mapping data on the platform, helping users receive answers that standard maps were unable to provide before. There is a new Ask Maps button in the app that lets users pose questions via text or voice, as stated by Google in a blog post. For instance, users can inquire whether it is better to drive or take the subway to a destination at a certain time, or where they might stop for coffee along the route. The company asserts that Google Maps evaluates traffic situations, estimated travel times, and nearby spots to give suggestions along with navigation help.

In addition to this, it can assist with planning trips and finding new locations. For example, users organizing a night out can ask where they can catch a live sports event while enjoying vegetarian snacks. Ask Maps then reviews available information to provide relevant suggestions and insights, like popular dishes, the ambiance on game days, or if valet parking is offered. The feature can also tailor responses based on a user's activity within the app. It considers the places users have searched for or saved before in Maps. For instance, Google illustrated that if a user generally looks for vegetarian dining options, the AI feature can highlight similar choices when recommending eateries in a new city, thereby providing suggestions that align more closely with the user's tastes. According to Google, the conversational system also enables follow-up questions. Users can make their searches more specific by asking further questions, such as which location has easier parking or better access.

The experience powered by AI is said to be based on details about over 300 million locations found on Google Maps. It is also reported that the system utilizes information from a worldwide network of more than 500 million users who share reviews, pictures, ratings, and updates about different places. The Ask Maps feature has begun to be released in India and the US for both Android and iOS versions of Google Maps. At the moment, it is available in English, with Hindi support expected to come shortly. In addition to Ask Maps, Google has introduced Immersive Navigation. This is described as the most significant upgrade for driving in Google Maps in over ten years. According to the company, the app has new visuals that make driving directions clearer and easier to understand. After this update, Google Maps can show a 3D view of the area around, including buildings, terrain, and bridges along the way.

The app also highlights important details about roads, like lanes, pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, and stop signs when necessary, according to the company. This understanding of routes is enhanced by Gemini models, which examine real-life images from Street View and aerial views. Google Maps will also offer a wider preview of the path ahead to assist drivers in anticipating upcoming turns or changes in lanes. Voice navigation instructions have been refreshed to sound more like natural conversation. Additionally, the app will assist drivers in understanding the benefits and drawbacks of different routes by presenting choices like a quicker route that has tolls or a slightly longer route with lighter traffic. Maps will also alert them about issues such as roadwork or accidents, using information submitted by its community of drivers. Google mentions that Immersive Navigation is beginning to be released in the US and will grow over the next few months to include supported Android and iOS devices, as well as vehicles compatible with CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars equipped with Google built-in.
