WhatsApp is planning to introduce a feature next year that will let users create a username, based on a report. The company has reportedly asked businesses to modify their operations and upgrade their systems. WhatsApp mentioned that this new option would be voluntary, allowing users to either show their usernames or their phone numbers. The platform, owned by Meta, has pointed out several advantages of using usernames, such as enhancing individual privacy and helping businesses create a stronger identity on the app. A function that enables users to claim their usernames was recently seen in a test version of WhatsApp. In a message, the messaging app contacted WhatsApp Business Accounts (through Android Police), notifying them to get ready for the launch of the new Username feature. WhatsApp expressed that users with business accounts utilizing the API will receive a new backend ID. These businesses can use these IDs in place of a client’s phone number.

To effectively support users who will have WhatsApp usernames, business account users will need to adjust their systems and workflows to include these new customer IDs, which are called “business-scoped user IDs.” According to WhatsApp's email, these IDs will be accessible to businesses using both current and future API versions as “a new webhook field.” Additionally, the messaging platform is encouraging businesses to start modifying their systems that currently rely on customer phone numbers so they can work with usernames instead. WhatsApp confirmed that the Usernames feature will launch next year and emphasized that it will be optional, allowing users to choose whether to use it.

The company also pointed out several “advantages” that this feature will offer to both users and businesses. WhatsApp explained that having the option to create a username would help individuals “better protect” their privacy, so their phone numbers won’t be visible during one-on-one chats or group discussions. Meanwhile, businesses will be able to “easily create” their brand image on the platform by displaying their usernames instead of their phone numbers.
