Tinder has launched a new facial verification tool called Face Check in the US, which they say will confirm that users are real and that their profile pictures are accurate. According to the company, Face Check uses a special, secure face map and face data to check photos and stop fake accounts. Along with other safety efforts, this feature aims to cut down on people pretending to be others and help users find genuine connections on the dating app. The US is the newest place where Tinder's Face Check is available, having already been launched in Colombia, Canada, Australia, India, and various Southeast Asian countries. It began in California and will soon be available in other US states. The company stated in a blog post that this feature requires a live face check when someone first signs up. New Tinder members can do a Face Check by recording a short selfie video in the app. This verifies that the person is real and present, and that their face matches their profile picture.

People receive a Photo Verified badge to show they are real. This badge also helps find if the same face is on many accounts, which lessens fake profiles and people pretending to be others. Tinder says its Face Check, along with other safety efforts, has worked well in other places. The company states it led to a 60 percent drop in meeting harmful users and a 40 percent decrease in reports about these harmful users. These harmful users are profiles that act deceptively or dangerously, like sending spam, trying to scam people, or running fake automated accounts (bots).

The company mentioned that video selfies for Face Check are only for finishing verification and are removed after checking. A permanent, coded face map and face vector are kept to help check new pictures, stop duplicate accounts, and find dishonest use. Besides Tinder, the Match Group plans to add Face Check to its other apps by next year.
