Michelle Carter a teenager who encouraged her suicidal boyfriend to kill himself in text messages, where she told him to get back in the truck filled with toxic gas is sentenced on Thursday for 15 months for involuntary manslaughter.
While coming into the case, Michelle carter, now 20, was convicted in June of manslaughter of Conrad Roy (18 yrs), who took his own life on 13th July 2014.
Carter was 17 when Roy was found dead due to carbon monoxide poisoning in a vehicle in 2014. The case drew attention when carters text messages were reveled where she has encouraged him in taking his life.where she said his parents will “get over” his death.
“Hang yourself, stab yourself I don’t know there’s a lot of ways,”she said it in several messages before his death when he was on a vacation with his family.
And the moments before his suicide she has written “You need to do it Conrad ,All you have to do is turn the generator on and you will be free and happy”.
Carter was allowed to be free pending an appeal.
Carter has faced a maximum of 20 years but her legal team has argued that both Conrad Roy and carter suffered from mental illness.
The prosecutor said that “Her actions killed Conrad Roy. She ended his life better her own”.
“She has not accepted her responsibility”she said. “She has shown no remorse”.
But Carter’s lawyer said it was a “horrible incident that she completely regrets”.
However Judge Lawrence Moniz said that “her age or level of maturity or even her mental illness have any significant impact on her actions”.
Mr.Roy’s father told in Thursdays hearing: “My family is heart broken and my son was my best friend”.
The case has divided legal opinions. Among the few to defend carter was Amanda Knox, who was convicted of murdering her British room mate in Italy in 2007 before she was cleared two years ago.
On Thursday the judge has sentenced Michelle Carter for 15 months jail and 5 years of probation.
