Kirkland & Ellis LLP To Open Office In Boston

Kirkland & Ellis LLP, the global legal giant has been counsel since long time for some of the biggest names in the Boston private equity. Now, the legal giant law firm is finally setting its own office in the city.

Kirkland, which is the second-highest grossing law firm in U.S. in the last year, announced on Monday that it would open an office at the 200 Clarendon in the Back Bay together with three partners who had worked with the firm from its Chicago and also New York locations.

This move puts an end to the years of speculation in the local legal circles that Kirkland would be the nextlargest firm to set up an office in Boston.

The law firm was founded in Chicago, which is still the home to its largest office, but the firm has represented the Boston-based private equity firms such as the Bain Capital, ABRY Partners and also Summit Partners.

“In some ways, it’s a natural evolution. We’ve been flirting with the idea for a long time,” Jon Ballis said, a member of the law firm’s global management executive committee, based in the location of Chicago.

Ballis said, the law firm has three primary goals for starting the Boston office, getting closer to the main Boston clients, to win more work from both the new clients as well as the existing clients for which the firm currently does a little amount of work, and also securing better access to the Boston-based private equity legal talent.

The three partners who are launching the Boston office are Ian Bushner and Neal Rennan from Chicago and also Armand Della Monica from New York. All the three partners specialize in the private equity, advising clients on the leveraged buyouts and also mergers and acquisitions.

The plan is for the Kirkland is to continue the building out team in the coming months, according to the statement from the firm. The firm declined to comment on the square footage of its new Boston office.

The firm has 1,900 attorneys in the 13 offices worldwide, including the eight offices in the U.S. In the last year the firm generated $2.7 billion in the gross revenue, which is a 15 percent increase compared to the previous year and also second only to the Latham & Watkins LLP among the U.S. firms, as per The American Lawyer.
