Warren Urges State To Fight Trump Health Agenda

The U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren urged Boston business leaders to rally against the President Trump’s health agenda, warning the administration’s budget would decimate the state’s hospitals and also the universities.

The President Donald Trump’s budget blueprint “takes a meat ax to the budget of the National Institutes of Health,” Warren said, cutting NIH budget by more than the 20 percent.

In the fiscal year 2016, Massachusetts received more than $2.5 billion in the NIH funding. The state has 190 NIH-funded institutions, including the universities like Harvard and MIT, and also the hospitals like Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s.

“From the bottom of my heart, please get in this fight,” she told to New England Council luncheon attendees. “It is in your economic interest to be in these fights.”

However, Warren said that she and other Democrats are open to working with Trump on tax reform.

“It depends on where the president wants to go,” she told to reporters after the luncheon. “If Trump is willing to do some of the things that we’re trying to advance,” then “there’s a place to work.”

Trump and also the House Speaker Paul Ryan are expected to turn their attention to the major tax code overhaul after House Republicans failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act in the last week.

“If he wants to put forward tax reform that’s more help for millionaires and billionaires, and another punch in the gut to working families the way his health care reform bill went, then I think he’s going to have a real problem on his hands,” she said. “He’ll have a fight.”

Later in hours, Warren launched a anti-Trump fundraising effort.
